How to Brief an OEM for Private-Label Pet Products

How to Brief an OEM for Private-Label Pet Products

A clear OEM brief saves weeks. Most delays in pet accessories come from missing decisions — not from the factory floor.

Start with the buyer problem

Define the channel (Amazon, retail, specialty), target pet (cat/dog), and the job the SKU must do. For feeders, say whether you need portion control, wet-food friendly bowls, or a fountain + feeder set. For toys and grooming, specify size range and washability.

Lock structure before color

Share reference photos, critical dimensions, and what must stay fixed vs. open for ODM improvement. Ask for a structure sample first, then colorways and packaging. Changing cavity geometry after tooling is expensive; changing color or carton print is not.

Write the commercial gates

Include target FOBex-works range, expected annual volume, first order quantity, and sample lead time. Confirm packaging language, barcode type, and carton drop-test needs early. A good brief also states compliance markets (EU / US / UK) so materials and labels are planned once.

When those points are written down, OEM and ODM programs move with fewer handoffs — and fewer surprise costs after sampling.

NEXT STEP

Discuss your product brief.

Share the target market, use case, and expected volume — we’ll map a practical OEM/ODM path.
