ODM works when the calendar is honest. Pet brands often expect retail-ready cartons in the same week as the first structure sample. That compression creates rework.
A workable sequence
- Brief & feasibility — 3–7 days for platform fit and rough cost.
- Structure sample — typically around two weeks for many accessory SKUs after specs are clear.
- Function & finish sample — color, texture, electronics/pump if any, and user-facing details.
- Packaging proof — dieline, languages, barcodes, and carton marks.
- Pilot lot — small run against the approved sample with outgoing inspection.
What to freeze at each gate
Do not open packaging artwork until structure is approved. Do not book peak-season freight until the pilot lot passes. Keep one owner for sample comments so the factory is not chasing conflicting markups.
If you need a faster path, start from an existing Pethola platform and limit changes to color, logo, and packaging — that is often the shortest route from brief to carton.
